2ND DISTRICT

LEGACY ELEVATED
The “Mighty” Second District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., spans five eastern states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland. Established in 1947, the district has grown from 11 to 80 chapters, hosting historic milestones like the founding of seven single-letter chapters and the creation of the fraternity’s first inter-racial chapter at Rutgers University in 1949. It has also been home to significant figures, including five Grand Basilei, fraternity founders Edgar A. Love and Dr. Oscar J. Cooper, and distinguished leaders like Bro. Marion English, the first District Keeper of Records and Seal. The district has hosted twelve Grand Conclaves and was instrumental in shaping the fraternity’s organizational structure, with foundational contributions to its constitution and by-laws.

The Second District is known for pioneering impactful programs that align with Omega Psi Phi’s principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. The Talent Hunt program was created to provide opportunities for Black youth to showcase their artistic talents, and the Shirtsleeve Conference, introduced by Bro. James S. Avery, became a forum for brothers to collaborate and enhance district programming. The district has supported numerous community-focused initiatives, including raising funds for the United Negro College Fund, developing the Langston Hughes Housing Project in Brooklyn, and providing mentorship and education programs. These efforts highlight the district’s commitment to empowering Black communities and fostering personal and professional growth.

Among the district’s many distinguished members is Bro. Frank “Tick” Coleman, who dedicated his life to mentoring youth and supporting education. A Lincoln University graduate, he funded scholarships and brought Scouting programs to underprivileged youth, earning recognition as one of the oldest living Black Eagle Scouts. Other notable members include Bro. Grant Reynolds, who played a pivotal role in ending segregation in the U.S. Armed Forces, and Bro. Langston Hughes, whose literary contributions shaped the Harlem Renaissance. Bro. Joe Black became the first Black pitcher to win a World Series game, and Bro. Earl Graves founded *Black Enterprise* magazine, advancing Black entrepreneurship. These accomplishments underscore the Second District’s legacy of excellence, leadership, and service to Omega Psi Phi and the wider community.
