Brother You're On My Mind

Brother, You’re on My Mind
(BYOMM) Initiative

Mission
The BYOMM initiative is dedicated to addressing mental health disparities by fostering open conversations about depression, stress, and their effects on African American men and their families.

Goals of BYOMM

  1. Education and Awareness: Equip Omega members, families, and communities with knowledge about the impacts of depression and stress on mental health.

  2. Encouraging Action: Promote the importance of seeking mental health support and empower individuals to access appropriate resources and treatment.

Activities and Engagement Strategies

Omega chapters within the Second District are encouraged to actively participate by:

  • Identifying and sharing local mental health resources and providers.

  • Hosting mental health professionals as guest speakers at chapter meetings to educate brothers about depression and stress.

  • Distributing informative materials in community hubs such as barbershops, churches, and community centers.

  • Organizing or participating in health fairs with a focus on mental health.

  • Collaborating with congregations and health ministries to integrate mental health discussions into faith-based settings.

  • Partnering with local organizations to host workshops and amplify outreach efforts.

  • Advocating for local proclamations recognizing the importance of men’s mental health.

Support from NIMHD
NIMHD plays a crucial role in the initiative by developing science-based educational materials and providing support for evaluation, resources, and access to mental health experts who can engage with communities.

Why BYOMM Matters
Untreated mental illness can have devastating consequences, including increased risks of substance abuse, homelessness, incarceration, and suicide. For African American men aged 15 to 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. By taking action, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity members across the Second District can create a ripple effect of awareness, education, and support, saving lives and fostering healthier communities.

Together, we can break the silence, end the stigma, and ensure that African American men know they are not alone.
